20 Students Graduate from Maui Job Corps

The Hawaiʻi Job Corps Center will hold their commencement ceremony today, Aug. 15, 2018 at 5 p.m. at the Maunaloa campus.

Twenty individuals will receive certificates in trades such as culinary arts, facility maintenance, retail sales and business technologies.

Job Corps is the nation’s largest federally funded job training and education program for youth ages 16 through 24 years of age. The program offers underserved youth a second chance to complete their education and advance into careers, higher education or the military.

Former Maui County Councilmember and Acting Director of Water Supply Gladys Baisa will be the keynote speaker. United States Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s office will also  present a congratulatory message to the graduating class.

The student speaker is Vanessa Dan, who completed the Office Administration trade and served as secretary for the Student Government Association. She completed her offsite work based learning internship as an office assistant Harbor Lights Condominiums was offered employment there upon graduation, based on her positive performance.

The alumni speaker is Sam Albert, who completed the Facilities Maintenance trade and then went on to overhead linesman advance training at the Oneanta Job Corps Center in New York. “Sam exemplifies all the qualities of a Job Corps graduate. He is now an employee in the site’s facility maintenance department, where he instructs, leads and mentors students on a daily basis,” according to Job Corps representatives.
