Maui Shelter Needs Being Assessed in Response to Brush Fires

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education is working with Maui County officials in response to brush fires that broke out Friday in West Maui.

An emergency shelter for hurricane evacuees at Lahaina Intermediate had to be closed and evacuees were relocated. There currently are no schools being used as shelters in the Lahaina area.

“Maui complex area superintendents Lindsay Ball and Kathleen Dimino are working closely with county leadership to accommodate the evolving needs of the community as a result of the fires and Hurricane Lane,” said Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto. “On behalf of the Department, I’d like to thank them as well as our complex leaders statewide for providing flexible access to our campuses through a coordinated effort with our school leaders and staff. Mahalo to all HIDOE employees who are working tirelessly to support their communities.”

HIDOE public schools and offices on all islands remain closed today as Hurricane Lane passes near the state as a Category 2 storm. The cancellation of all HIDOE after-school activities and programs, including interscholastic athletic events and After-School Plus (A+) Programs statewide, remains in effect through the weekend.
