Maui Electric Debuts Electric Vehicle Fast Charging Station

Electric vehicle drivers have a new charging option in Central Maui with the debut of a DC Fast Charger at the Maui Electric office in Kahului.

A new DC fast-charging station is now available at the Maui Electric office in Kahului for drivers of electric vehicles.

The DC Fast Charger will allow EV drivers to quickly charge their domestic or foreign EVs 24 hours a day, every day.

“We’re excited to be able to offer EV drivers a new charging option in Central Maui, where they can quickly top off their batteries and save money,” said Gregg Kresge, director of renewable energy at Maui Electric. “By using a DC fast charger operated by our company, EV drivers will have more control over how much they pay to charge their vehicles. Rather than paying a flat rate, they will pay per kilowatt-hour of electricity at our Time-of-Use rates, which offer a lower rate during the day when solar energy is typically available and abundant.”

On Maui, the Time-of-Use rate is 49 cents per kilowatt-hour between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., 62 cents per kWh between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., and 60 cents per kWh between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m.

The fast charger can charge a typical 100-mile EV battery up to 80% full in less than 30 minutes. While mileage varies, a typical electric vehicle gets about 3.5 miles per kWh.
