The purpose of the Kīpahulu Comprehensive Plan (KCP) is to balance recreational access and visitor facilities with protection of the park’s important natural and cultural resources. The renewed planning process will examine current and new visitor opportunities and will outline long-term management strategies.

The purpose of the KCP is to improve visitor access to and enjoyment of the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park while reducing visitor-caused impacts to the park’s resources; to improve safety; and to ensure adequate operational capacity and facilities given the area’s remote location.

The plan provides guidance on improvements to areas including the visitor center, trails, campground, as well as improvements to supporting National Park Service operational facilities such as the maintenance area buildings, fee station, staff housing, and staff offices.
