A $1.1 million project to repair the Waiopai Bridge in Hāna gets underway next week and will run through February 2019. The repairs will impact traffic, especially for residents of Kaupō.

The county Department of Public Works notes that there will be a complete closure of the Piʻilani Highway in East Maui at the crossing between Mile 28 and 29 during night time hours between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. for two weeks starting Monday, Oct. 8 and continuing through Oct. 22, 2018. For those two weeks, the road will be open to daytime two-lane traffic during the other hours (4 a.m. to 7 p.m.).

From Monday, Oct. 22, 2018 to late February, 24-hour one-lane alternating traffic will be available.

Construction work will be active from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, weather permitting, except for weekends and holidays.

The contract was awarded to Grace Pacific LLC and includes the replacement of bridge railings, concrete deck slab and approach metal guardrails, along with other work to the structure, which was built in 1982.

Kaupō residents, who would have to go through Hāna to reach Central Maui during complete closures, have been notified of the construction.
