Maui County Federal Credit Union was named a Blue Zones Project Approved worksite as part of an initiative to promote healthier lifestyle practices.

Brought to Hawaiʻi through an innovative sponsorship by the Hawai‘i Medical Service Association, the Blue Zones Project is a community-led well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes to lifestyle, environment, policy and social networks.

“We are proud to be the first credit union on Maui to become an approved Blue Zones Project worksite,” said MCFCU president and CEO Gary Fukuroku. “The healthy changes we’ve made to our worksite and work policies have boosted moral and camaraderie, which allows us to better serve our customers and the community.”

More than 40% of MCFCU’s employees signed the Blue Zones Project Personal Pledge and committed themselves to adopt healthy habits into their lifestyles. This pledge includes small ways in which they can make healthier decisions on a daily basis.

The credit union celebrated this recognition with a ceremony at their Wailuku branch. Employees were treated to a healthy lunch and customers were able to enter to win a gift certificate to Foodland.

The credit union achieved Blue Zones Project Approved status by successfully adopting best practices that promote employee well-being, including:

  • Encouraging walking meetings through the “Walk n Talk” initiative
  • Organizing a steps challenge to encourage natural movement throughout the day
  • Offering yoga with a trained instructor
  • Hosting a plant-based cooking class
  • Creating an employee newsletter, which includes healthy recipes

MCFCU was originally established in 1937 to serve the needs of County, State, and Federal Government employees and their families. In February 2016, MC FCU revised its field of membership to a community charter. Now, anyone that resides within the County of Maui is eligible to join.

MCFCU continues to offer its members a wide variety of financial services and products at its three locations in Wailuku, Kahului, and Lahaina.
