Washington State Visitor Critically Injured at DT Fleming

A visitor from Washington State suffered critical injuries while swimming at DT Fleming Beach in West Maui.

Authorities say the 54-year-old man was injured in the shorebreak and suffered a suspected spinal injury.

The incident was reported at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018.

Bystanders were already assisting the man out of the water when ocean safety personnel were alerted of the situation, according to department reports.

The man was reportedly unconscious, but regained a pulse thanks to lifesaving efforts on scene. Nāpili firefighters and medics assisted with lifesaving efforts.

He was eventually transported by medics to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further care.
