Upper Kanaio Home Destroyed by Fire

Maui firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire in the upper Kanaio area at 8:09 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018.

Upon arrival on scene in the remote area above Upper Kanaio Road, crews found a structure approximately 600 square feet that had already been completely destroyed by fire.

Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said because of difficult access due to rugged terrain, four wheel drive utility brush trucks were used to get water to the fire.

The fire was officially declared extinguished at 2:40 p.m.

No one was home at the time of the fire and the cause is undetermined. There are also no injuries to report.

Crews from Kula, Makawao, and Kahului responded to the incident along with the department’s Air 1 helicopter.
