Schmidt Sentenced in Wailuku Supermarket Slaying
A man accused of murdering his estranged wife at a Wailuku supermarket was sentenced on Thursday morning to life in prison with the possibility of parole, according to court documents. Stephen B. Schmidt was also ordered to serve a 10 year term to run concurrently and pay $8,925 in restitution, under a sentence handed down by Judge Peter Cahill.
Schmidt had pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of second degree murder and other charges in connection with the case.
The charges stem from an April 19, 2016 incident at the Kehalani Foodland in Wailuku in which 24-year-old Kehau Farias Schmidt had her throat slashed, and two men who tried to intervene (James Reeves of Haʻikū and Scott Spencer “Kip” Stolsig of Wailuku) were stabbed. A third individual, David Ryan testified in a preliminary hearing that he was shopping with Farias Schmidt when he was confronted by the suspect, who allegedly pulled out a knife.
During an evidentiary hearing in May of 2017, several doctors testified in an attempt to determine Schmidt’s mental fitness.
