Sen. Hirono to Donate Pay to Food Banks Across Hawaiʻi

Sen. Mazie K. Hirono announced that she will donate the pay she receives during the partial government shutdown to food banks in all four counties across Hawaiʻi.

“More than 2,500 federal workers in Hawaiʻi are either furloughed or working without pay during the holidays because Donald Trump shut down the government,” Sen. Hirono said. “As long as Donald Trump refuses to re-open the government, I will be donating my salary to Hawaiʻi’s food banks, who serve nearly one in eight Hawaiʻi residents in need.”

Senator Hirono will split her salary between the Hawaiʻi Food Bank on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi, the Maui Food Bank, and the Hawaiʻi Food Basket on Hawaiʻi Island.

During the January 2018 shutdown, Sen. Hirono donated her salary to Hawaiʻi’s 14 Federally Qualified Community Health Centers. Sen. Hirono also donated her salary to Lanakila Pacific, Hawaiʻi Meals on Wheels, the Hawaiʻi County Economic Opportunity Council, the Kauaʻi Economic Opportunity, and Hale Mahaolu during the government shutdown in 2013.
