Q:  Where can people dump their old mattresses or furniture on Maui? I see them once in a while on the street and in the most random places. You’d think people would know, but I’m pretty sure they just don’t care.

A:  Good question! Our Department of Environmental Management is asked about this from time to time and I think it’s always good to remind residents of their options.

Our landfills do accept old mattresses and I strongly encourage residents to properly dispose of their unwanted beds, rather than leave them on the side of the road. We all have a personal responsibility to keep our environment clean and safe for generations.

Mattresses in good condition could possibly be given away or donated to shelters such as Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center. If you have chairs, couches or other furniture in very good condition, you could try calling Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity. They may accept your donated furniture, but only if it meets their standard for resale.

Mattresses in poor condition will need to be disposed of at the landfill. It should not be left out in the elements or dumped because it is against the law and can become a safety or fire hazard.
