Makeshift Campsite in Kula Destroyed by Fire
A makeshift campsite burned to the ground on Tuesday morning in Kula.
The incident was reported at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, in the brush area between Keanuhea Street and Kula Highway.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found the campsite completely burned.
The department’s Air 1 helicopter was called to assist with water drops because of the remote location, which was difficult to access with firefighting vehicles. The fire was quickly contained and later declared extinguished at around noon.
Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said there were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is unknown.
Firefighters from Makawao and Kahului responded.
