Hawai‘i-Made Film Comes to Maui Regency Cinema

Hawaiʻi-made independent film “Stoke” is coming to Maui’s Kīhei Cinemas for one-night only on Thursday, March 28, at 7 p.m.

The road-trip film was partially shot in front of Kīlauea volcano’s famous 2017 “lava hose,” a 40-foot river of lava pouring into the Pacific ocean. “Stoke” is rated R for language and brief nudity.

The drama follows Jane, a struggling tourist who hires two wannabe guides to take her to an active volcano. While Jane (Caitlin Holcombe) struggles to let go of a grievous past, tension grows as Dusty (Ka’uhane Lopes) and Po (Randall Galius Junior) grapple with the tourism industry created by their volcano until an untimely detour sends the group in an unexpected direction. Also featured in the film are Hawaiʻi-based actors Kimee Balmilero (Hawaiʻi 5.0, Magnum PI) and Po’okela award winner Danielle Zalopany.

Stoke’s soundtrack features the work of Willie K, Bub Pratt, Mark Keali’i Ho’omalu, Keali’i Reichel, Anthony Garza, Uncle’s Awa band and more.

The film premiered at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival, won the Best Women in Film award at the Austin Indie Fest, an Award of Merit through the IndieFest Film Awards, and will be featured in the upcoming Women of Wonder’s film festival on Oʻahu.

Directors Zoe Eisenberg and Phillips Payson will be in attendance for a brief Q&A following the screening.

“This is our first time screening on Maui, and we couldn’t be happier to make our island premiere at the gorgeous Kīhei Cinema,” says the film’s co-director Zoe Eisenberg, who will be in attendance at the event alongside co-director Phillips Payson.

The filmmakers are also giving a free, open to the public screening and talkback of their 2015 film Aloha From Lavaland at Akakū Community Media on Friday March 29 at 6 p.m.
