KA’APUNI UPDATE: 2/22/09 SUNDAY 4:15 p.m.

This is your Ka’apuni update for Sunday evening, February 22^nd—the torch lit procession for unity in the Native Hawaiian Community handed off the next leg of the journey to the Hana crew at Wahine Pe’e just past the Waikamoi Nature Trail. Some of the marchers from Lahaina were up for upwards of 36 hours since the March began on Friday night at Moku’ula. The Lahaina crew was greeted by the Uncle Bully Ho’opai and several dozen Hana residents about 10 miles into the windy portion of the Hana Highway. The group left Wahine Pe’e at around 4:15 headed east. The 193-mile Ka’apuni E Ho’a Kukui O Na Moku `Aina journey is expected to take about six days to complete. The procession is rounding out the second full day under a light drizzle and diminished light.

Approaching and passing Motorists are reminded to be aware of the passing escort vehicles and procession—and are advised to use extra caution for the safety of those on the road and on foot.
