West Maui Kumuwai to Host Community Cleanup

West Maui Kumuwai, a collaborative campaign focused on removing ocean pollution, will host a community cleanup and native plant care workday at Hanakaʻōʻō, Canoe Beach, on Saturday, April 6. The event is being held in recognition of Earth Month and is open to anyone interested in volunteering. Event organizers will meet with volunteers by the cemetery at Hanakaʻōʻō/Canoe Beach, below the highway at 8:30 a.m.

Volunteers will get the chance to care for the native plants above the Hanakaʻōʻō cemetery that were planted in 2013 as an erosion control project under the West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative. According to WMK, debris has built up in this area from the highway above and the plants are in need of proper care. Volunteers will have the option to participate in either the cleanup or plant care, or both.

WMK will provide water, refreshments, and supplies. Volunteers are encouraged to bring sun protection and any of their favorite gardening tools. WMK also suggests that any volunteers interested in taking home clippings of native plants bring an appropriate container.
