Four Rescued from Strong Current at Pu‘u Keka‘a
Four individuals were assisted to shore after encountering difficulty due to strong currents at Puʻu Kekaʻa or “Black Rock” in Kāʻanapali on Sunday, June 2, 2019.
Crews were first called to the scene for a report of a male and female who were observed hanging onto rocks and calling for help.
Firefighters from the Lahaina station made their way to the north side of Puʻu Kekaʻa to assist the swimmers.
Lifeguards on a rescue watercraft were able to bring the swimmers to shore at about 11:25 a.m.
Fire officials say the swimmers were exhausted, but no medical attention was needed.
While completing the rescue, the same lifeguard assisted two scuba divers who also needed help to shore due to the strong current. The scuba divers were part of a larger dive group that was able to make it to shore on their own.
