Ask The Mayor: What’s Delaying the Makawao Avenue Resurfacing Project?
Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his staff.
Q: I was wondering what the holdup is on the Makawao Avenue resurfacing project. There is a portion that was started and not completed. Also, many thanks for resurfacing Pulehu Road.
A: I appreciate your gratitude for our dedicated and hard-working employees in the Department of Public Works. It is often a thankless job where their accomplishments can go unnoticed or underappreciated.
Regarding the status on the Makawao Avenue reconstruction, the portion just east of Pulehu Road has been delayed due to the sidewalk/guardrail redesign. We have the completed redesign and received a price from the contractor.
Prior to completing the construction work, however, we will need to obtain review and approval from the state Department of Transportation and the Federal Highways Administration. We expect the reconstruction work to be completed in the next four to five months, but possibly sooner.
