One person is dead and five others were transported to the hospital following a head-on crash in Hāliʻimaile, Maui on Sunday night.
Maui police have since identified the woman who died in the crash as 39-year-old Teresa Pham of Spring Texas. Police say she was a passenger in a Nissan sedan that was traveling northwest on Hāliʻimaile Road, when it was struck head-on by a silver Honda Accord that was traveling in the opposite direction.
Four other individuals in the Nissan, all of whom are visitors, were transported to the hospital. This included the 48-year-old male driver, along with a 50-year-old female passenger, a 50-year-old male passenger and a 14-year-old juvenile passenger who remained hospitalized at last report. Police say they were on their way to the airport when the collision occurred.
Police say the Honda Accord was being operated by a 23-year-old female resident of Pāʻia. She was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The crash occurred on Hāliʻimaile Road, about 0.1 mile southwest of Hoʻomālie Place at approximately 9:22 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2019.
According to a preliminary investigation, the Honda was traveling northeast on Hāliʻimaile Road when it crossed left of center and first collided with the drivers side of a silver Land Rover Discovery sports utility vehicle, which was traveling in the opposite direction. Police say that after it “sideswiped” the Land Rover, the Honda continued on a path, still traveling left of center, and collided head-on into the grey Nissan four door sedan.
The Land Rover Discovery vehicle had a total of five occupants, but none were transported to the hospital.
Police say they are investigating the use of seat belts by all individuals involved. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol have yet to be determined, as the accident investigation is ongoing.
This was the 10th traffic fatality of the year on Maui County roads, compared to four at the same time last year.
The accident forced the closure of Hāliʻimaile Road for approximately four hours, with the road reopening shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday, June 17, 2019.
