Georgia Man Critically Injured in Mākena Shorebreak

A visitor to Maui was critically injured in the shorebreak at Oneloa “Big Beach” in Mākena on Monday morning, June 17, 2019.

The incident was reported at around 10:39 a.m. when beachgoers witnessed a 56-year-old Georgia man get hit by a wave in the shorebreak. Fire officials say witnesses saw the man surface face down shortly after.

Responding units included Engine 14 and Ocean Safety lifeguards.

Fire officials say lifeguards worked to remove the man from the water and initiated CPR.

Firefighters from Engine 14, medics, and lifeguards continued lifesaving efforts and loaded the patient into an ambulance for transport to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Crews left the scene at 11:30 a.m.
