High Surf Advisory for East, South Shores

The National Weather Service has extended the high surf advisory for east facing shores of Maui and Molokaʻi and has issued a high surf advisory for south facing shores of all Maui County islands, in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2019.

“A large east swell generated by East Pacific Tropical Cyclone Barbara is spreading across the island chain this weekend. In addition, a new long period south-southwest swell is increasing surf along south facing shores,” according to the NWS forecast.

The NWS says, “These two swells will likely maintain elevated surf along exposed east and south facing shores through Sunday.”

The public can expect increasing surf along east facing shores of Molokaʻi and Maui of 5 to 10 feet today, then building to 6 to 12 feet Sunday. Along south facing shores of all islands can expect surf of 5 to 8 feet this weekend.

Beach goers can expect “strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.”

Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers are urged to heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution. “Know your limits; when in doubt, don’t go out,” according to the NWS advisory.
