Fire Below Pukalani Burns 5,300 Acres, 80% Contained
As of 3 p.m. today, the fire is now 80% contained, and holding at approximately 5300 acres.
“The continued rain, light winds and cooler conditions have aided in reducing fire activity,” said Chris Stankis, Acting Information Officer with the Maui Fire Department.
Fire crews continue to douse hot spots and flare ups along the perimeter. Heavy equipment is still working to cut and reinforce fire breaks around the fire. In addition to the heavy equipment operators, one MFD engine, a tanker and a battalion chief remain on scene.
According to Stankis the department’s Air 1 helicopter has only been used for observation flights today due to the inclement weather and reduction in fire activity, but remains on standby if conditions change.
“An investigation into the cause of the fire has revealed that the fire was accidental and caused by farm equipment working in the fields near Haleakala Highway,” said Stankis.

Fire Below Pukalani Burns 5,300 Acres, 60% Contained
The large wildfire below Pukalani is now 60% contained and burned approximately 5,300 acres. Callback fire crews are working to douse hot spots and establish fire breaks around the perimeter of the fire this morning.
“The arrival of rain early this morning has slowed the fire activity and is helping fire crews with containment,” said Chris Stankis, Acting Information Officer with the Maui Fire Department.
Fire officials say the fire burned primarily former sugar cane fields. “Thus far the only damage has been to some MECO power lines, as well as some irrigation equipment owned by Mahi Pono,” said Stankis.
There have been no reports of widespread power outage and the cause of the fire is still under investigation as of this morning.
