The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the island of Maui until 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019.
According to the NWS, radar at 9:12 a.m. indicated heavy rain near moving over leeward Maui from the south, with rainfall rates up to two inches per hour leading to localized flooding.
A rain gauge in Lahainaluna just recorded a half inch of rain in 15 minutes, according to the NWS.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to: Kapalua, Puʻunēnē, Waikapū, Lahaina, Nāpili and Kāʻanapali.
As a precaution, the public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on
foot. “Turn around, don’t drown,” the NWS says.
