Input Sought on Proposed Wailuku Zoning Updates
The Maui Redevelopment Agency is hosting three workshops in August for the public to help shape the next generation of development in Wailuku.
The agency aims to use the workshops, as well as its regular August meeting, to gather ideas, inform and answer questions on proposed zoning updates for Wailuku Town. The public may drop-in at the workshops anytime.
MRA Chairman Frank De Rego Jr. said, “We look forward to hearing from the community. This is an important process of refining the details that will improve protections for the things we love most about Wailuku, while creating incentives for context-appropriate revitalization.”
The community is encouraged to attend one of the four opportunities:
- Thursday, Aug. 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Good Shepherd Church, Parrish Hall.
- Friday, Aug. 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Church, Parrish Hall.
- Friday, Aug. 23, starting at 1 p.m. at Kalana Pakui Building, 250 South High Street, Wailuku Planning Commission Conference Room (Formal Agenda https://www.mauicounty.gov/Archive.aspx?AMID=86)
- Tuesday, Aug. 27 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Mayor’s Conference Room, 200 South High Street on the 9th floor (Summary presentation with Q&A)
The MRA is working in partnership with the Planning Implementation Division of the Planning Department to kick-off zoning updates in Wailuku town first.
Last year, Wailuku was designated a federal Opportunity Zone by the Secretary of the U.S. Treasury. Under the Opportunity Zone program, new investments may be eligible for tax benefits, making Wailuku an attractive place to develop or redevelop.To ensure new development is in keeping with Wailuku’s sense of place, the zoning for the area needs to be clear, predictable and represent the community’s expectations for the neighborhood.
In 2017, national planning and zoning experts from Orion Planning + Design were hired by the Department of Planning to conduct an audit of the County’s existing zoning tools.
Orion published a report of their finding in March of 2018 and made recommendations to overhaul Title 19 (https://www.mauicounty.gov/121/Planning-Department).
The Orion team is assisting the MRA and community with the Wailuku town zoning updates.In addition to the four meetings being held in August, the MRA will host two meetings in September with the expectation of a public hearing to be held in November 2019.
