Hawai’i Economist’s Presentation to Comment on “Overtourism”
The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council is hosting a free lecture by economist Paul Brewbaker.
The presentation, titled “Overtourism and Sea Level Rise: Some Economic Dimensions,” will discuss the similarities of economic policy responses to excessive tourism and rising sea levels in Hawai’i.
“One of the hottest topics on Maui right now is tourism — and how much is too much for our environment and way of life,” MNMRC programs manager Amy Hodges said in a press release.
Brewbaker is the Principal of TZ Economics, a Hawaiʻi economics consultancy. His background in research on Hawaiʻi’s economy stems from a 25-year affiliation with the Bank of Hawaiʻi, concluding as its chief economist.
“Just as ‘resilience is the new sustainability,ʻ overtourism is the new GMO,” Brewbaker said in a press release.
The talk will be held on Sept. 4 during the MNMRC’s monthly meeting time, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at The Sphere at Maui Ocean Center in Ma’alaea. Doors open at 5 p.m.
While admission is free, the MNMRC strongly recommends making reservations, as seating is limited.
