Crews Responding to Fire at Maui Eko Compost Facility

A large compost fire at the Maui Eko Systems Compost Facility in Puʻunēnē is not threatening any homes or property and is not expected to close any roads, according to Maui Fire officials.

The Maui Fire Department received a report of the fire at Maui Eko Systems at 5:48 p.m. today.

MFDʻs Engine 10 from Kahului, HazMat 10, two MFD tankers, as well as a tanker from the County Public Works were sent to the scene. A loader is helping to break up the pile.

Fire officials are warning that the blaze is creating a large amount of smoke.

“Compost fires are difficult to extinguish and heavy equipment is being used to break up the pile,” the MFD wrote in a press release.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Fire officials are unsure of when the fire will be extinguished.
