When uncle Kimokeo Kapahulehua started Paddle for Life 11 years ago, a small fleet of about six canoes took the 36-mile round trip between Maui and Lānaʻi to honor those impacted by cancer.

Now, over a decade later, about 30 canoes and several hundreds of paddlers are expected to participate in this yearʻs Paddle for Life fundraiser.

“Itʻs just amazing that we have people locally here in the islands, especially Maui supporters,” uncle Kimokeo said.

Last yearʻs Paddle for Life raised over $240,000 for Mauiʻs cancer community.

Event organizers call the paddle a “spiritual journey.” Some paddlers have a way of taking loved ones, who cannot physically join the voyage, along with them.

“We have a lot of people that do not paddle with us, and we bring their photograph and we put it on the canoe,” Uncle Kimo added.

All of the proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Maui cancer patients and their families through the Pacific Cancer Foundation.

Maui Now is once again the proud media sponsor of the Paddle for Life fundraiser. We will be providing further coverage of the two-day event, which will be held on Oct. 12 and 13.
