Seabury Hall Girls Star in National Cybersecurity Talent Competition

Seabury Hall girls topped the leaderboard in the nation’s largest high school cybersecurity talent competition, Girls Go CyberStart, designed to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap in the US. Seabury Hall girls finished 3rd in the state, and 47th overall nationwide.

Seabury Hall sophomore Lyn Chen ’22 traveled to the Governor’s Office on Oct. 11, 2019, to be recognized on behalf of the Seabury Hall Girls GoCyberStart team. The recognition was held in conjunction with Governor David Ige proclaiming October to be Hawaiʻi CyberSecurity Month.

“I am so proud of this year’s winners and finalists for representing Hawaii well. The competition results are a testament to the level of talent we have in Hawaii. Our young women have demonstrated that they are competitive on the national level and we must continue to inspire more of Hawaiʻi’s youth to explore potential careers in cyber security,” said Gov. Ige.

The Seabury Hall finalists Alara Berkman ’22, Lyn Chen ’22, Megan Malcolm ’20 , and Bella Otterson ’20 competed in a national online ‘Capture the Flag’ competition, in which they solved problems from disciplines such as cryptography, password cracking, digital forensics and open source intelligence gathering.

More than ten thousand girls across 27 states took part in the Girls Go CyberStart program. Only 1,228 were named semifinalists and 465 were named finalists.

Seabury Hall was established in 1964 and is a Coeducational College Preparatory Day School serving Grades 6-12 located in Makawao on Maui.
