Noenoe Nights at Mākena Workshop Series to Honor Maui’s Wāhine
The Mākena Golf & Beach Club partners with the community-based non-profit organization Ala Kukui, to introduce Noenoe Nights at Mākena, a collaborative workshop series that uplifts and celebrates wāhine (women) as reflections of kupuna (ancestors).
The free workshop series will feature several evenings recognizing the many roles that wāhine hold in the Maui community and creating connection throught Hawaiʻi storytelling and arts and crafts. The inaugural workshop will be held on Friday, Nov. 29, 2019 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the club’s Mākena Vista event lawn, and will celebrate Maui’s educators.
All self-identifying female teachers, administrators, and school support staff, as well as kumu (teachers) of hula, the arts, or any social support programs, are invited to attend the first Noenoe Nights at Mākena. The event is free, limited to 30 participants, and seats are offered on a first-to-register basis. Light pupu and refreshments will be provided.
Attendees will experience an intimate evening of creating and tasting as they enjoy Hawai’i story-telling and Lāʻau Kāpala. Lāʻau Kāpala is the Hawaiian art technique of stamping with Hawaiʻi plants. Maiʻa (banana), lāʻī (ti leaf) and kalo (taro) will be the lāʻau used to kāpala (stamp) individual designs.
Noenoe Uakea is the name of the light misty rain that moistens the skin and makes supple the fallen lauhala. It floats in on the Mālualua breeze and clings to Pu’u o Ka’uiki regenerating the waters of Kapueokahi. Regeneration, Grace, Beauty, and Perseverance are the qualities acknowledged and known to be innate in all wāhine (women). With that, Noenoe Nights by Ala Kukui was born in Hana.
Ala Kukui has now partnered with Mākena Golf & Beach Club to bring Noenoe Nights to the island’s southern shore, to mingle with the Nāulu cloud regenerating ‘Ulupalakua, Mākena and Kaho‘olawe. A monthly offering, Noenoe Nights at Mākena, will announce future workshop dates in the coming weeks.
“Noenoe Nights is a gathering for women that is grounded in culture and celebrates wāhine roles in ʻohana and community. We are excited to partner with Mākena Golf & Beach Club to bring Noenoe Uakea to the Nāulu and hopefully inspire other wāhine to connect, rejuvenate and reflect on self and place,” says Kauʻi Kanakaʻole, Executive Director for Ala Kukui.
“We are inspired by the beautiful ways Ala Kukui is elevating and recognizing place-based knowledge and its inherent interdependence with collective community abundance” says Mākena Golf & Beach Club’s Community Relations Manager, Leahi Hall. “Through these events, we wish to elevate those regenerative relationships that sustain Hawai‘i wellbeing.”
