Nonprofit Offers Tips for Working With Frustrated Students

School can become a frustrating experience for some students.

Leaders from Maui Hui Mālama, a local nonprofit group that aims to empower at-risk youth, say they have recently received a surge in phone calls for students who “feel like they donʻt have the tools to be successful.”

“Not all students are alike, and not all school systems work for every student,” a press release from the organization read.

In an effort to improve learning environments for Mauiʻs keiki, Maui Hui Mālama staff have offered the following tips they have learned through working with frustrated youth:

• Allow students to explain how they are feeling. Sometimes the issues are much deeper than the school work.
• Remember that every learner is different. Donʻt expect that a learner who is good at one thing should be good at everything.
• Donʻt start a conversation with “How come youʻre not doing it well?” Understand that youth may not know how to communicate what their frustrations are. Verbalizing disappointment towards youth may prevent them from expressing their feelings.
• Think outside of the box. Help can be offered in many ways. Those ways can include art, music, and gardening. Not every learner does best in a classroom setting.
• Provide learners a chance to excel in areas they enjoy the most.

Maui Hui Mālama also offers tutoring, GED/HISET test preparation services, clothing, and food bags for youth in need.
