Governor David Ige plans to announce support for the Hawai‘i State Department of Education’s proposal to tackle the teacher shortage through pay increases.

The governor will join education leaders in a press conference on Tuesday morning in which they plan to announce retention and recruitment strategies.

Phase I of this effort is a proposed pay differential that would increase compensation for classroom teachers in Special Education, Hawaiian Language Immersion programs and hard to staff areas.

HIDOE is seeking the BOE’s approval for this pay differential proposal at the upcoming BOE meeting on Thursday, Dec. 5.
