A blessing and grand opening ceremony for the new South Maui Community Park Gymnasium is set for 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2019.

The nearly $21.4 million gymnasium has 31,858 square feet of space, bleacher seating for more than 1,000 people and 170 parking stalls. There’s also restrooms, showers, a wireless sound and public address system, offices, public meeting rooms, a concession area, space for food trucks and an R1 recycled water irrigation system.

Those attending Monday’s event are asked to wear soft-soled rubber shoes to protect the new gym floor.

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino said, “I’m very excited to see this long-awaited gymnasium finally open. It is shiny brand new and ready for basketball and volleyball action. I have no doubt that our families and keiki will enjoy countless hours of friendly competition on these gym floors. I can foresee this gym becoming a focal point of the South Maui community.”

“Monday will truly be a special moment for our South Maui families and residents, who now have a gym they can call their own,” Parks and Recreation Director Karla Peters said. “This gym has the largest court space in Maui County and serves as a symbol of excellence that our Department and Mayor Victorino strive to provide our people. We look forward to all the sporting events, tournaments and community gatherings that will be hosted at this state-of-the art facility.”

“I’d like to thank contractor Blazy Construction Inc., consultant Nishikawa Associates Inc., our Department of Parks and Recreation staff and everyone who has worked so hard to complete this new gymnasium,” Mayor Victorino said.

The gym is located at 1501 Līloa Drive in Kīhei.
