Ask the Mayor: Adopting a Road Cleanup Program

Mayor Michael Victorino answers some of the most-asked questions.

Q: How would I go about adopting a cleanup program for Maui County roads?

A: Mahalo for taking an interest in helping to maintain our roadways! I wish everyone took as
much ownership of our streets as you do.

Our Department of Public Works is starting to explore an “Adopt-A-Street” program that would
focus on heavily used County roads/streets. However, we are still very early in the process and
still coming up with more ideas and fleshing out the concept. We also would need to work out a
variety of issues that could arise with such a program in order for it to be a success.

As you probably already know, the State Department of Transportation has its own Adopt-A-
Highway program with volunteers picking up litter along Hawaii’s highways, which not only
makes for a cleaner roadside, but also prevents pollutants from entering storm drains, streams
and the ocean. Community groups, churches, businesses and individuals all help to maintain a
section of roadside within the state highway system and the State DOT even erects a sign to
recognize the groups’ cleaning efforts.

We really do like this concept for our roadways and our County Highways Division will continue
to look at how to develop our own version.
