Update: 4:45 pm. 2.10.20

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park closed again as of 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, 2020 and will remain closed until further notice due to winter weather conditions and power outages. Due to these hazards, all sunrise reservations for Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020 are cancelled.

“We strongly advise people against traveling on Haleakalā Highway to the park as the gates to the park will be closed due to the winter weather conditions. Once conditions improve, and are safe for our staff and visitors, the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park will reopen,” said Superintendent Natalie Gates in an afternoon update.

The National Weather Service has extended the Winter Weather Advisory for Haleakalā Summit in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020 saying additional snow accumulations are expected overnight above the 8,500 foot elevation.

There is a temporary road closure in Haleakalā National Park due to winter weather conditions. The Haleakalā Highway temporary closure begins at Kalahaku Overlook (9,324 feet) and extends up to the summit of Haleakalā. The Haleakalā Visitor Center (at 9,740 feet) is currently closed. Once conditions improve, Haleakalā Highway and Haleakalā Visitor Center will reopen.

Visitors are advised to use caution on driving on roadways as conditions can quickly change. Visitors with sunrise reservations are advised to check the park website and the National Weather Service www.weather.gov for conditions prior to coming to the park as unexpected weather related closures may occur.

The Park Headquarters Visitor Center (7,000 feet) and the Kīpahulu Visitor Center in the Kīpahulu District remain open.
