33rd Annual Hoʻomau to Feature Star-Studded Lineup
The 33rd annual Hoʻomau, a benefit concert for Hawaiian language preschool Pūnana Leo o Maui, will be held on March 28 from 9 a.m. until sunset at the Maui Nui Botanical Garden.
This yearʻs theme is “I Mau ʻo Hawaiʻi He ʻĀina Aloha,” which is roughly translated as “In order to preserve Hawaiʻi as a beloved homeland.”
“We shall protect and be loyal to our ʻāina so that Hawaiʻi remains an ʻāina aloha. We shall honor our kūpuna so that Hawaiʻi remains an ʻāina aloha. We shall increase and preserve our nation so that Hawaiʻi remains an ʻāina aloha. We shall speak Hawaiian so that Hawaiʻi remains an ʻāina aloha. We shall seek knowledge so that Hawaiʻi remains an ʻāina aloha. We shall carry our responsibilities so that Hawaiʻi remains an ʻāina aloha,” the event website read, describing the meaning behind the theme.
“We all may come from different backgrounds, different up-bringings and we all may have different professions and careers, but living in Hawaiʻi, we all have kuleana. Kuleana to our ʻohana, kuleana to our kaiāulu (community) and greater kuleana to our lāhui. Whether we are conscious of it or not, we all do what we do, so that we ensure Hawaiʻi remains an ʻāina aloha, that Hawaiʻi remains Hawaiʻi; our land, our language, our culture, our people; he Hawaiʻi. I mau ʻo Hawaiʻi he ʻāina aloha.”
