Sen. English Announces $204 Million for Projects in 7th Senatorial District

Senate Majority Leader J. Kalani English of Maui announced that over $204 million in Capital Improvement Project funds were released by Governor David Ige for the senator’s District 7, which covers Hāna, East and Upcountry Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i and Kaho‘olawe.

Project highlights include funding for improvements to the Moloka‘i Irrigation System, plans for a baseball/softball complex for King Kekaulike High School on Maui, a new classroom building for Pāʻia Elementary School on Maui, facility improvements for the airports on Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i and Maui; construction for widening a portion of the Haleakala Highway, and plans to complete the Pāʻia Bypass on Maui. 

“As the largest senatorial district in the state, encompassing East Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i and Kaho‘olawe, I am tasked with making sure that each community has the necessary resources to support our constituents,” said Sen. English. “Rep. Lynn DeCoite, Rep. Kyle Yamashita ant I work very hard to secure funding for projects that are essential in maintaining the vibrancy of our district.”

The funded projects in District 7, in total, are as follows:

• Plans, design, construction, and equipment for roof replacement and the installation of metal bleachers at Kaunakakai Elementary School, Moloka‘i ($750,000).
• Plans, design and construction for a covered walkway and the reroofing of Building E, plus ground and site improvements, and equipment and appurtenances for Hʻaikū Elementary School, Maui ($700,000).
• The construction of the Hāna Health Rehabilitation and Support Center on Maui ($250,000).
• Plans, design and construction for improvements to the Moloka‘i Irrigation System, plus equipment ($9.3 million).
• For Kalama Intermediate School, Maui: Construction to renovate the parking lot, plus ground and site improvements, and equipment and appurtenances; design for due diligence effort for the construction of a multipurpose room; and design to replace the campus fire alarm, plus ground and site improvements, and equipment and appurtenances ($393,000 total).
• For King Kekaulike High School, Maui: Construction to replace campus fire alarm, and ground and site improvements, and equipment and appurtenances; plans for the design and construction of a baseball/softball complex, including a turf field, site improvements, lights, scoreboard, equipment and appurtenances ($1.817 million total).
• Construction for ADA transition at Kualapu‘u Elementary School, Moloka‘i ($300,000).
• Construction of covered walkways, ground and site improvements, and equipment and appurtenances at Makawao Elementary School, Maui ($850,000).
• Design and construction for a baseball field at Moloka‘i High School ($300,000).
• Design and construction for a new classroom building, ground and site improvements, and equipment and appurtenances for Pāʻia Elementary School, Maui ($17 million).
• Design for due diligence effort for land acquisition for Makawao Public Library, Maui ($200,000).
• Plans, design and construction of the Coqui Frog Eradication Containment Barrier on Maui ($1.5 million).
• Plans, design and construction of a resource protection fence in Kanaio, Maui ($800,000).
• Plans, design and construction, and equipment, of a fence to protect and restore a dryland forest in the leeward Haleakala region of Maui ($300,000).
• Plans, design and construction, and equipment, for the Kanahā Beach Park Greywater Reuse Demonstration Project. Includes installation, updates, and improvements. This is provided that partial matching funds be provided by the County of Maui ($450,000).
• Kahului Airport, Maui: Construction for facility improvements, and improvements to the terminal and other related improvements ($38 million total).
• Design and construction for improvements to various facilities and other related improvements at the Hāna Airport, Maui ($2.4 million total).
• Design for improvements of various facilities and other related improvements at Moloka‘i Airport ($3.5 million).
• Design and construction for improvements of various facilities and other related improvements at Lāna‘i Airport. ($2.4 million).
• Construction for widening the Haleakalā Highway at mile post 0.8 from one lane to two lanes, extending a box culvert and constructing headwalls and wing walls ($4 million).
• Hāna Highway Bridge Preservation, Maui: Two projects aimed at land acquisition and design for the implementation of the bridge preservation plan in the vicinity of the Hāna Preservation District, to include bridge rehabilitation and/or replacement. They are deemed necessary to qualify for federal aid financing and/or reimbursement ($4.25 million total).
• Construction for improving, upgrading and/or repairing roadways, bridges, walls, drainage structures, guardrails, and other facilties on Route 360 Hāna Highway ($2.7 million).
• Plans, land acquisition, design, construction, and equipment to complete the Pāʻia Bypass, Maui, including equipment and appurtenances, refurbishment, improvements, rehabilitation, new construction, renovation, and replacement. This project is deemed necessary to qualify for federal aid financing and/or reimbursement ($110 million).
• Plans, design, construction, and equipment for irrigation improvements, related improvements, refurbishment, and new construction; ground and site improvements, equipment and appurtenances for the Kula Agricultural Station, University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, Maui ($500,000).
• Construction for renovations and improvements to Ahupua‘a o Moloka‘i including, but not limited to, improvements for ADA compliance and energy efficiency. This project qualifies as a grant, pursuant to Chapter 42F, HRS ($100,000).
• Plans, design, and construction for a second building of the Hale Mahaolu Senior Housing campus in Pukalani, Maui. This project qualifies as a grant, pursuant to Chapter 42F, HRS ($750,000).
• Construction for facility improvements and completion of the Bud Schafer, John Hoxie Woodworking & Innovation Center at Hui Noeau, Maui. This project qualifies as a grant, pursuant to Chapter 42F, HRS ($200,000).
• Construction for a new facility for Maui Youth and Family Services and other related improvements for substance abuse treatment, homeless youth services, behavioral health and other support for under-served youth, families, and adults. Project may include the demolition of the current facility. This project qualifies as a grant, pursuant to Chapter 42F, HRS ($250,000).
• Land acquisition and construction for purchase of existing home and renovations and improvements for long-term residential and service needs of adults with autism at the Wisdom Center for Autism, Maui. This project qualifies as a grant, pursuant to Chapter 42F, HRS ($100,000).
