Heavy Rain Prompts Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the island of Maui until 1:15 p.m.

According to the NWS, radar indicated heavy rain across the windward sides of Haleakalā and West Maui Mountains at about 10 a.m. Rain was reportedly falling at a rate of up to 2 inches an hour.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Kahului, Kapalua, Honokōhau, Kahakuloa, Puʻunēnē, Haliʻimaile, Paʻuwela, Waikapū, Makawao, Wailuku, Pāʻia and Waiʻehu.

“Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action,” an announcement from the NWS advised.

“Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.”
