Burglary Arrest on Maui During Civil Emergency Becomes Class A Felony

Maui police arrested and charged a 37-year-old Maui man with three counts of Burglary of a Dwelling during a Civil Emergency and Habitual Property Crimes. Due to the County of Maui being in a Disaster Emergency Relief Period, the Burglary of a Dwelling offense becomes a class “A” felony.

William Heintz was taken into custody at 12:24 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2020.

Police say an investigation into the incident reveals that Heintz allegedly entered two separate residences in Wailuku on March 25, and stole items valued at $700.

A day later, on March 26, police say Heintz unlawfully entered another Wailuku home and fled upon hearing an alarm.

Police located Heintz at a Wailuku residence on Monday, March 30, 2020, and the department’s Crime Reduction Unit and the Special Response Team executed search warrants.

Police say that as a result of the search, several illegal drugs, including heroin, crystal methamphetamine, marijuana and pills were recovered. In addtion, reported stolen items and other undocumented stolen items were recovered, according to police.

Bail for Heintz was set at $160,000. As of April 1, 2020, he remains in police custody.

“Rest assured, the Maui Police Department is committed to the safety of our community and will continue to enforce laws. Those that take advantage during this unprecedented time will be charged accordingly,” said Maui Police Department spokesperson Lieutenant Audra Sellers.
