1,000 Bags of Produce to be Distributed on Thursday in Central and South Maui to Residents in Need

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino is providing updates on Pacific Media Group’s network of Maui stations this week. Today, the mayor spoke with listeners of KISS FM 99.9 on Maui, and shared his thoughts on preparedness, testing and ongoing measures to flatten the curve of the COVID-19″ pandemic in the islands.

During this morning’s interview, with Charly Espina-Takahama and Ed Kanoi, the mayor discussed details of a food distribution effort in Central and South Maui planned for 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2020. The effort will involve the distribution of about 1,000 bags of produce to residents in need.

Central Maui Distribution:

The Central Maui distribution will be at the War Memorial Gym parking lot.   “It’s basically the same set up we used for the drive through testing,” said Mayor Victorino.  “The area is sanitized and clean, so nobody has to worry, but it works so well because–starting from Kanaloa, on the parking side of Kanaloa next to the Little League field–we can line up cars into Haliʻa Nakoa, which is the road that leads into the gym.”

The distribution point will be in the parking lot with tents set up at the site. “You don’t have to come out of your car. Just roll down your window.  We will pass it to you and we’ll pass you a couple of face masks to make sure you are prepared at home.  I ask everybody, when you come, be patient.”

Distribution starts and 10 a.m. and continues until supplies are gone. There will be 350 bags for Kahului residents; and 350 for Wailuku residents, according to the Mayor.

South Maui Distribution: 

Simultaneously at the South Kīhei Gym, there will be a produce food distribution set up at the parking lot there.  “You come off of Līloa into the gym parking lot.  We’ll have tents set up with people directing you.”

The public is reminded that these distribution sites are for individuals in need that may have gotten laid off, furloughed or otherwise are unable to provide for their families.

The distributions this week are made possible with help from: County employees; VIP food donations; Mahi Pono donation fo 20 cases of potatoes; Maui Chemical providing bags; and Matson for use of their refrigerated containers.
