Hawaiian Airlines May Day 2020 to Broadcast Amid COVID-19 Restrictions
Kāhuli Leo Le‘a is partnering with Hawaiʻi News Now to produce “Hawaiian Airlines May Day 2020: Aloha ʻĀina,” transitioning the live event into a TV broadcast. Organizers say viewers can experience the annual Lei Day celebration from the comfort and safety of their homes.
The broadcast will air on Friday, May 1, 2020
- 7 p.m. on Hawaiʻi TV broadcast (KHNL), HawaiiNewsNow.com, or Hawaiʻi News Now Facebook Live
- 8 p.m. on Hawaiʻi TV broadcast (K5) or HawaiiNewsNow.com
The program will feature Keauhou, the 17-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning group, with special guests, Robert Cazimero, Josh Tatofi, Lehua Kalima, and Kainani Kahaunaele. All artists will perform remotely to align with social distancing practices and will be brought together through the technology of broadcast programming. Those who purchased tickets for the live event will receive a full refund.
“Our decision to cancel the live event at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center was not easy, but we are embracing a great opportunity that puts our community first,” said Zachary Lum, producer of Hawaiian Airlines May Day 2020 and Executive Director of Kāhuli Leo Leʻa. “While we may not gather in person this year, it is important that we still celebrate the values that make our island community special. May Day, and its values of aloha ʻāina, will give us the chance to celebrate together.”
The broadcast will be another memorable chapter in the series of May Day concerts with the joint support of co-title sponsors, Hawaiian Airlines and the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, and associate sponsors, Matson and Walmart.
