Water Cutbacks Canceled for Wailuku-Kahului-Pā‘ia Domestic System

The County of Maui Department of Water Supply has canceled water cutbacks for customers on its Wailuku-Kahului-Pāʻia system.

“We now have three of four wells back online, so the Department of Water Supply is comfortable with the amount of water available for our customers,” Department of Water Supply Director Jeffrey Pearson said. “We appreciate our customers’ cooperation in reducing water usage during this time.”

“I would like to remind all of our water customers that we’re heading into the hot summer months when demand for water typically rises,” Pearson said. “So, we appreciate continued conservative use of water. This saves money for consumers on water bills and helps safeguard our precious resource of water.”

Late last month, the County of Maui declared a Stage 1 water shortage after a Wailuku water pump failure over the April 25-26 weekend.  The department was working to get three well pumps on line when the Wailuku Well No. 2 failed the end of April.

During the shortage, the department’s capacity had decreased by as much as 6 million gallons per day, according to department officials. Water demand in the system area averages about 24 mgd.
