Roundup: Central East Claims 3 Baseball Crowns

A few days after two of their all-star teams captured local tournament titles, Central East Maui collected yet another crown by clinching the District 3 crown in the Senior Division with an 11-0 romp past Upcountry.
That means Central East has qualified teams for three of Little League baseball’s state tournaments to be held July 15-19.
The Majors’ event for 11- and 12-year-olds will be played on the Valley Isle. The Juniors’ event for 13- and 14-year-olds will be played at Kailua High School on Oahu. The Seniors’ event for 14- and 16-year-olds also will be held on Oahu.
From the diamond to the links: The reason given by the PGA for forcing out Mark Rolfing as the lead organizer of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions is that the Kapalua event needs a 24/7 director. Rolfing’s principal gig is as a golf analyst on a variety of television networks often takes him off-island for assignments.
In other golf news, Dean Wilson, who grew up in Kaneohe, was high on the leaderboard following Thursday’s opening round of the AT&T National in Pennsylvania. The Castle High graduate was in a four-way deadlock for third place – and just one shot out of the lead — after firing a 3-under par 67.
Closer to home, the 56th edition of the Makawao Rodeo is under way and runs through Sunday at Oskie Rice Arena.
