Eat Me: Maui Bake Shop and Deli in Wailuku

Right off of Vineyard Street in Wailuku, stands a bakery and deli that really ups the ante for bakeries on Maui. At the Maui Bake Shop & Deli, customers can get their coffee and espresso fix, while letting their eyes and mouths devour the diversity of sweet pastries and savory menu items.

Patissier (pastry chef) and owner, Jose Krall, with his wife Claire, have been in the bake shop business since 1990. Open Monday through Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; this couple turns out aesthetically pleasing, and stomach-pain easing fare that is more than fair in price and flavor.

The food quality is consistently good. Cookies, breads, pastries, sandwiches, salads, soups and more, beckon the customer with beautiful sights, interesting textures, and mouthwatering scents. A plexiglass pastry case holds all kinds of buttery goodness. Napoleons, eclairs, croissant sandwiches, french horns, rolls, cherry tarts, etc., kind of wink at you from the case.

The breakfast and lunchtime menu consists of: omelets, eggs benedict, French toast, crab cakes, steak and eggs, Monte Cristo, beef bourguignon – a special treat, Reuben, pastrami, French dip sandwiches with fries, and much more.
