The homeowner and neighbors attempted to douse the fire with water until fire personnel could arrive to extinguish the fire.

An initial investigation by Fire and Police investigators reveals the Kinaole Circle fire was caused by embers from the brush fire located approximately 300 feet away.

Damages to the carport were estimated at $50,000 in structural damage and $20,000 in water damage to contents stored in the carport.

Investigators observed fire damage to a residential wooden fence on the northwest section of Ohukai Road as well, with damages estimated at $500.

Further investigation revealed that in an attempt to saturate a neighboring residential roof on Ohukai Road with water as a precautionary tactic, accidental water damage was caused to the residence, resulting in estimated damages of $6,000.

An inspection of the Kaiola Place and Ohukai Road brush area revealed that approximately one acre sustained damage from the fire. An electrical box located on Kaiola Place also sustained fire damage.

“Preliminary investigation reveals no signs of suspicious activity as to the origin of the fire,” Maui Fire Department officials said.
