Applications are currently being accepted for the second phase of Kahului Lani, an affordable senior rental complex developed by Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation in Central Maui. Kahului Lani provides seniors, ages 55 and over, who earn 60% or less of the county median income with an affordable permanent living option, offering complimentary amenities so residents can “age in place.”
The second phase of the Kahului Lani rental housing complex consists of 83 one-bedroom/one-bathroom air-conditioned units, located at 67 School Street in Kahului. The housing facility is being developed in partnership with GSF LLC and Hale Mahaolu is the property manager.
“With the second phase of Kahului Lani near completion, Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation is proud to play a role in assisting Maui County fill the need for affordable senior housing on Maui,” said Catholic Charities Hawai‘i CEO and president Rob Van Tassell. The first phase of Kahului Lani consisted of 81 rental units, which opened to tenants in 2020.
Lottery applications to determine tenants at Kahului Lani II will be accepted until Aug. 31, 2021. Applications can be picked up at Hale Mahaolu’s Kahului office at 200 Hina Avenue, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Only original applications completed and received by the Hale Mahaolu central office no later than 4 p.m. on Aug. 31, 2021 will be reviewed for eligibility and entered into a lottery to determine initial occupancy and wait list. Faxed applications will not be accepted. Qualified housing applications received after Aug. 31, 2021 will be added to the initial wait list in the order in which they were received.
Applicants must be at least 55 years of age at the time of application. The target move-in date for initial occupancy is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 2021. Smoking and pets are not permitted on the Kahului Lani grounds.
Incorporated in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating as a subsidiary of Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, CCHDC owns, develops, and manages real estate properties with the intent to provide affordable housing for the elderly, special needs individuals and other socially or economically disadvantaged persons and families.
Financing for the project was provided by the State Hawaiʻi Housing Finance & Development Corporation, First Hawaiian Bank, HHF LLC and CCHDC.
