No Tsunami Threat in Hawaii After 6+ Peru Quake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake along the northern border of Peru.

The earthquake was initially recorded as a 6.9, but the USGS has since downgraded it to a 6.8.

The tremor occurred at 7:46 a.m. HST, Wednesday, August 24, 2011 (12:46 p.m. at the epicenter).

It was located 51 miles N of Pucallpa, Peru; 127 miles W of Cruzeiro do Sul, Brazil, 194 miles NE of Huanuco, Peru, and 353 miles NNE of LIMA, Peru.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach issued a statement to Civil Defense Agencies in Hawaii saying, based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no threat to Hawaii.
