History Theatre Brings the Past to Life in Lahaina on Nov. 18 and 19

History Theatre returns to Lahaina on Thursday, Nov. 18, and Friday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. The performances will be held at the Lahaina Jodo Mission at 99 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina.

The Fall 2021 History Theatre program, with the theme of “Going to School,” will feature three dramatic monologues, highlighting stories from Hawaiʻi’s past in the words of the people who lived them.

Guests in November are invited to meet three important historic educators in Hawaiʻi:

• Clarissa Lyman Richards (1794-1861), portrayed by Emily Wright, who with her husband founded the Lahaina mission station at the request of Queen Keōpūolani;
• Carlotta Stewart Lai (1881-1952), portrayed by Jeanné Wynne Herring, who taught both at the Punahou Normal School and at Koʻolau Elementary School on Kauaʻi, where she became its principal and
• John Henry Wise (1868-1937), portrayed by Albert Ueligitone, who became the second Hawaiian Language Professor at University of Hawaiʻi.

History Theatre begins at 6:30 p.m.; gates open at 6 p.m. The dramatic portrayals take place concurrently, with audience members rotating between each actor.

The event will be held outdoors, so guests are asked to dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes. Maui County and State of Hawaiʻi health and safety regulations will be followed. Free parking is available on Ala Moana Street.
