Maui County Students Among Participants in “Keep Our Schools Open” Campaign

A new education awareness initiative gives students and teachers from across the state a chance to explain in their own words why in-person learning is crucial to ensure keiki are thriving and are poised to succeed.

The “Keep Our Schools Open” campaign is a joint effort by Kamehameha Schools, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education, and Hawaii News Now, with support from various educational institutions and local businesses.

The first broadcast special associated with this campaign is a town hall set to premiere on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021.

One of the participants, Nāmakaokaʻāina Ross, is a senior and cross country runner at Molokaʻi High School. He relied on his family to help him get through the pandemic, especially when his track season was interrupted last year.

Another element of the initiative is a public service announcement that features several students, including Kale Spencer, a Kamehameha Schools Maui senior and varsity football player.

Hawaii News Now will broadcast “Evolving Education: Learning Through COVID” on:

• Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. on KGMB and HNN digital platforms
• Thursday, Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. on K5
• Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. on KHNL

During a special edition of the Keiki and Teen Council next month, students will share how schools have adapted to ensure the next generation has a safe and nurturing learning environment.
