South Maui District Office Opens to Public

South Maui’s first County Council District Office, located at the Maui Research and Technology Park, is now open to the public.

Funding for the South Maui District Office was included in the County’s Fiscal Year 2022 Budget as a priority line item by Councilmember Kelly Takaya King, who made the announcement today.

The office, located in Suite 9 of the Maui Economic Development Board Building (at 1305 North Holopono Street) in Kīhei, is open to all members of the public. Hours are from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the exception of federal and state holidays. 

“The new Kīhei District Office gives South Maui residents a nearby place to stop in, connect to the business of the County Council, and receive essential information for being citizens engaged in the Council’s legislative process,” said Councilmember King. “In the coming weeks, the location will be fully furnished with the capability to support individuals who would like to provide remote testimony to the County Council and its committees.”

“Bringing government to the people is one of my priorities,” said Councilmember King. “Democracy works best when we all participate and stay engaged as citizens. South Maui is one of the largest and fastest growing communities in the State, and this District Office along with the recently convened South Maui Advisory Committee to the Planning Commission will do much to ensure our community concerns and input are represented.” 

The South Maui District Office will follow the latest County, State, and CDC COVID-19 protocol. Visitors should wear a mask or face covering and maintain a minimum of six feet physical distance from others at all times. Capacity may be limited as needed to ensure adequate physical distancing, according to the announcement. 

Additionally, symptomatic or ill individuals should stay home and follow the CDC’s guidance, which is available online at CDC.gov.

Councilmember King noted that she and her staff are all fully vaccinated.

“I am excited to begin working out of the South Maui District Office, close to my constituents,” said Councilmember King. “While I am away at the U.N. Climate Conference in Glasgow until Nov. 14, my staff will be completing the office set up and available to assist visitors.”

Daniel Kanahele, a South Maui resident and long-time community advocate guided by the value of Aloha ʻĀina, has been hired to staff the newly opened district office. “As the newest member of Councilmember King’s team and staff for the new South Maui District Office, I will work to promote the well-being and aloha spirit of all the residents of Maui,” he said.

Kanahele joins Councilmember King’s team of Axel Beers, Ellen McKinley, and Sarah Sexton. 

Beers, a former journalist and educator, specializes in issues regarding infrastructure, affordable housing, the county budget, economic development, and youth engagement. McKinley, a South Maui resident and attorney licensed in California and Washington, covers government relations, the public trust, planning, and South Maui community matters. Sexton’s background is in live event production, and she manages office administration and scheduling for Councilmember King.
