The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking public input to assist in developing its public outreach programs pertaining to federally funded roads and multi-use trails. Input will be used to update the MPO’s public participation plan to guide public engagement in the MPO’s transportation planning efforts. A link to the survey can be found at mauimpo.org.

“We rely on the public for assistance in the Maui MPO’s decision-making efforts,” said Yuki Lei Sugimura, chair of the Maui MPO Policy Board. “An updated public engagement framework will assist us in making sure that our communication to the public is effective, and that voices are heard as we plan for Maui Island’s transportation future.”

The Maui MPO is a local agency that partners with the State of Hawaiʻi and County of Maui to comprehensively plan for federally funded and regionally significant transportation systems on Maui Island. Maui residents may recall the agency’s most recent planning effort, Hele Mai Maui 2040, a long-range transportation plan for the island.

“We’ve experienced a shift in communication, outreach and participation during the recent pandemic,” said Kathleen Ross Aoki, chair of the Maui MPO technical advisory committee. “We are excited to update this public engagement plan to reflect our new reality, and reach more people than ever before.”

The survey asks about the public’s experiences interacting with the MPO and the responses will help the Maui MPO update its current participation plan. The survey takes about five minutes to complete.
