Kapalua Fire Burns Maui Forestry Land
By Wendy Osher
Maui firefighters continue to battle a blaze above Kapalua Airport that started overnight.
The brush fire was first reported at around 1 a.m., with initial size estimates at around 5 to 10 acres.
Responding to the fire were Engine 11, Mini 11, Tanker 3, Engine 3, and Utility 3.
The ground crews had difficulty accessing the fire, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga, and air crews were called in to assist.
Authorities say they are calling on Wildland crews to assist with the firefighting efforts which have encroached on state forestry land.
